Terms of use
DeepCivic is an open-source project that aggregates civic data and publishes research tools. By accessing this site, downloading datasets, or using our software, you agree to these terms. We keep them straightforward: use the data responsibly and respect original licences.
Content & licensing
We do not own the underlying government data. We aggregate, transform, and publish it according to the terms set by original custodians.
| Asset Type | Licence | Usage Rights |
|---|---|---|
| Government datasets | Inherited from source (CC, ODC, etc.) | Follow original custodian terms |
| DeepCivic software | Apache 2.0 | Free to use, modify, and distribute |
| Stories & Write-ups | Creative Commons BY 4.0 | Share and adapt with attribution |
| Derived metrics | DeepCivic derivation | Use freely; label as '[DeepCivic derivation]' adjacent to the figure |
You must credit original sources when reusing our content. If a dataset carries specific restrictions (e.g. non-commercial use), those restrictions apply to your reuse as well.
Acceptable use
We expect users to treat this resource responsibly. Permitted uses include civic research, academic analysis, software development, and personal learning.
Prohibited uses include:
- Misrepresenting DeepCivic derivations as official government statistics.
- Using automated scrapers that disrupt site performance or bypass rate limits.
- Distributing malware, phishing content, or illegal material through our contact channels or repositories.
- Claiming endorsement by government agencies without explicit written permission.
Persistent violations may result in blocked access or public notice of misuse. We reserve the right to restrict access at our discretion.
Disclaimers & practical limits
This project operates at community scale. We do not maintain enterprise service levels, dedicated compliance officers, or 24/7 monitoring.
- Accuracy: Data accuracy depends on original sources. We verify our methods, but we cannot guarantee completeness, real-time updates, or error-free transformations.
- No warranties: All content, datasets, and software are provided "as is". We make no guarantees regarding fitness for a particular purpose or uninterrupted availability.
- Decision liability: You are responsible for how you use our data. DeepCivic accepts no liability for decisions, financial outcomes, or research conclusions drawn from our materials.
- No professional advice: Content here is for informational purposes only. It does not constitute legal, financial, or professional advice.
- Third-party links: We frequently link to external portals and repositories. Their terms and privacy policies apply once you leave our domain.
Corrections & updates
We prioritise transparency over perfection. If you identify a data error, broken link, or methodological flaw, report it via our contact form or GitHub repository.
- Response window: We review submissions within five to ten business days depending on current workload.
- Corrections: We apply fixes directly to the affected content or cache and note significant changes in our project changelog.
- No SLA: We do not guarantee incident response times or formal remediation processes.
We may update these terms to reflect changes in data sourcing, software licensing, or project scope. Material changes will be noted in our project changelog. Continued use of DeepCivic after updates constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.
Liability & indemnity
To the extent permitted by Australian law:
- DeepCivic contributors and core team members cannot be held personally liable for damages arising from use of this project.
- You agree to indemnify and hold harmless the project contributors against claims resulting from your misuse of our data, software, or content.
- This limitation does not affect your statutory rights under Australian law. (duh!)
We are volunteers. This clause protects individuals who contribute time and code in good faith.
